In the Netherlands you can buy Indian groceries at Indian and Asian shops (toko's) or online. Ordering online is most useful for heavy staples such as basmati rice in 10 or 20 kg bags, atta and dal. At Easy Day Foods, delivery in the Netherlands costs €6.95 and is free from €29 of products. You pay with iDEAL, Visa or Mastercard.
Where can you buy Indian groceries in the Netherlands?
You have three options: an Indian or Asian shop in your city, an online Indian grocery store, or the world-food aisle of a regular supermarket. Regular supermarkets usually stock small packs and a limited range, so for large bags and specific brands you need an Indian shop or a webshop.
| Option | Good for | Less handy when |
|---|---|---|
| Indian or Asian shop | Fresh items, take home today, advice in store | You live far away or must carry heavy bags |
| Online Indian grocery store | Large packs, specific brands, home delivery | You need something today |
| Regular supermarket | A jar of spices or a tin of chickpeas | You need atta, specific dals or 10 kg of rice |

Which Indian groceries should you buy first?
A working Indian pantry starts with basmati rice, atta (flour for chapati), two or three dals, ghee or oil and five spices: cumin seeds, turmeric, chilli powder, ground coriander and garam masala. With those you can cook most everyday dishes.
Our guide Indian pantry essentials: 12 staples explains what each item is for and how much to buy. Not sure which dal to pick? Read types of dal explained.
Are 10 and 20 kg packs better value?
Usually yes: large bags of rice and atta tend to have a lower price per kilo than small packs. Every product on Easy Day Foods shows its price per kilo so you can compare. Only buy big if you will use it within its shelf life.
Atta contains the wheat germ, so it turns rancid sooner than white flour. A 10 kg bag mainly suits households that make chapati often. Rice and dal keep much longer when stored dry and airtight. See storing atta, rice and dal.

Can you bring Indian groceries from India in your luggage?
Dry products such as spices and dal can come in limited amounts, but meat and dairy cannot. Under EU rules for travellers, milk and milk products, which includes ghee and paneer, may not be brought in from non-EU countries such as India.
Exceptions only cover items such as infant food and special medical foods. That makes buying ghee in the Netherlands the simplest option. See our ghee and oil range.
How do you pay at an Indian webshop in the Netherlands?
At Easy Day Foods you pay on Stripe's secure payment page with iDEAL, Visa or Mastercard. All prices are in euros. You see the total including VAT and delivery before you pay.
