Spices & masala
Indian spices and masalas
Five spices cover most Indian cooking: cumin seeds (jeera), turmeric (haldi), chilli powder, ground coriander and garam masala, plus a pinch of hing for dal. Our spice range is growing; below is what is in stock now.
Which Indian spices do you really need?
Start with cumin seeds, turmeric, chilli powder, ground coriander and garam masala. Add mustard seeds and curry leaves for South Indian cooking. See Indian pantry essentials.
How should you store spices?
Dark, dry and airtight, away from the hob. Whole seeds keep their flavour longer than ground spices.
Frequently asked questions
- Is garam masala the same as curry powder?
- No. Curry powder contains plenty of turmeric; garam masala is a warming spice blend without it. See garam masala.
- What is jeera called in Dutch?
- Komijn. See jeera.
